In North America, only half of the livestock industry’s production ends up on our plates. Slaughterhouses, butcher shops, food processing plants, and even supermarkets are left with vast quantities of products that will never be consumed. So, what happens to these leftovers?

That’s where Sanimax comes in.

Sanimax has more than 2,500 employees serving over 25,000 clients in 4 countries, and here in South St. Paul, we have a rich history representing the rendering industry. Sanimax has been part of the greater Twin Cities area since 1882 and the South St. Paul community since 1958.

We are proud to be a part of the South St. Paul community.

Why is the Rendering Industry Important?

We consume more than 300 million meat products worldwide annually, and in North America, the standard is to consume about half an animal.

An essential part of the food supply chain is connecting where food comes from to how materials can be used again. The rendering industry reclaims unconsumed raw materials, 99% recycled into billions of pounds of fat, oil, and protein products.

The two million tons of organic materials Sanimax collects yearly would otherwise go into landfills.

Why does the summer heat make operations more complex?

The rise in temperatures can accelerate the break down of the materials we process during transport until they are processed in the plant. This requires us to adjust our equipment to continue operating efficiently. We understand that this can cause inconvenience to the neighborhood, and we want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to minimize the impacts.
